Using gritstone from the local quarry we worked to create a spiral seating and firepit area for the Natural Dye Garden. We used larch milled on site for the seat. The self-contained Natural Dye Garden is a space designed for the processing of wool fleece and the growing of natural dye plants. It contains all of the resources needed for the job, including the firepit for heating water, a large stone sink for washing the fleece and a series of raised beds within which are grown the appropriate plants for the dyeing process. These are planted according to the colours that the plants produce. Students have been involved in all aspects of this project, from the design, to the practical aspects of construction such as drystone walling, and woodwork.
